Why is it difficult to know what to do to stay healthy?
Short explanation by author, <10 min
In case you don't have time to go through the 10 min YouTube, here it is. Anything that impacts big industries money/income, the affected industry will invest in strategy, including scientific studies in credible universities, establishing journals, and similar platform to cast doubt, delay, to maintain their business.
Beside Cigarette, by Tobacco company, this has been done in
· Fluorocarbons (CFCs) & the Ozone Hole: When scientists discovered that Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were burning a hole in the ozone layer, these operatives argued that the science was too uncertain and that volcanic eruptions were actually to blame.
· Coal Smoke & Acid Rain: In the 1980s, they actively distorted data to hide the link between sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants and the acid rain destroying lakes and forests across North America.
· The Pesticide DDT: Decades after Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring prompted a ban on DDT, these merchants launched a revisionist history campaign, claiming the ban was a junk-science panic that caused millions of malaria deaths.
The Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"): They aggressively defended Ronald Reagan’s missile defense system against the broader scientific community, which had accurately pointed out that the space-laser technology was unfeasible.

The "Doubt" Strategy Marketed to the Public |
|
Sugar vs. Fat |
In the 1960s, the sugar industry secretly funded Harvard research to downplay sugar’s role in heart disease and shift 100% of the blame onto dietary fat and cholesterol. |
|
Asbestos |
For decades, manufacturers buried internal research showing that breathing asbestos causes mesothelioma, instead funding alternative studies to claim that only certain rare types of asbestos were harmful. |
|
Flame Retardants |
Highlighted heavily in the Merchants of Doubt documentary film, chemical corporations created a front group called "Citizens for Fire Safety" to invent fake data and stage emotional testimonies, successfully delaying bans on toxic, carcinogenic flame-retardant chemicals in furniture. |
|
Lead in Gasoline & Paint |
The lead lobby spent most of the 20th century funding biased research to declare lead levels "normal" and blamed parents' poor housekeeping for lead-poisoned children rather than their toxic paint and fuel. |
My point is
if we just follow the news, webpage, social medias, short interesting video clips in the WhatsApp, FB, IG etc,
we can be easily trapped by these intentional scientifically manufactured confusing info. Watch out!
The "Cost of Doubt" In Human Terms
Beyond the raw dollar amounts, the true cost of the merchants of doubt was lost time and life expectancy.
Because public health resources were weaponized against dietary fats (like eggs, butter, and meat), millions of Americans spent forty years eating highly processed, sugar-laden "low-fat" foods believing they were protecting their hearts. Consequently, generations of doctors gave flawed advice, and millions of patients suffered premature strokes, heart disease, amputations from diabetes, and metabolic decline.
Ultimately, the sugar industry spent approximately $50,000 (in today's money) to fund the 1967 literature review that shifted the blame. That tiny corporate investment successfully deferred regulations for nearly half a century, costing the American public hundreds of billions of dollars in medical debt and millions of preventable chronic illnesses.
