Recently, I visited a 15 year-old student, who developed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), initially, with ketoacidosis (mimicking type 1). Some time back, T2DM was actually named adult on set diabetes, and the recommendation to begin screening only age 40 or after. But look at the World Obesity Federation Program below, we can see that it is becoming a major health issue for the world. And it is creeping into our society too.
In case you are interested in the above event, you may sign up with the link above. The timing is not quite suitable for us in this time zone. However, the program likely will be made available on YouTube soon after the event. Below are the medical treatment options:
Prevention is indeed the way to go, even though there is whole host of methods/treatment to handle weight issue in life, surgeries, injections, tablets.
- Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: Creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it to the small intestine.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy: Removing a large portion of the stomach to reduce its size.
- Adjustable Gastric Banding: Placing an inflatable band around the top of the stomach.
Prevention actually starts as early as prenatal (during pregnancy). So attending Antenatal/Prenatal classes that include this element (nutrition) will be very useful.
Come join us for a walk and learn more.
