Ageing & Adaptation

 July 17

Most people do not like the idea of getting old.  But I have a friend who likes that - chronologically, not biologically.

He reasons that if he gets senior citizen status, he will get many benefits, discounted tickets for some travel (KTM, Rapid), entrance tickets, and also special "angpow" money for "old people" from govt.

Adaptation is a necessary skill to stay healthy and get best of what stage of life a person is in.

Physical adaptation:
This includes the body's natural adjustments to stressors like physical training, as well as changes made to accommodate disabilities, such as home modifications for mobility or the use of assistive devices.
  • Psychological adaptation:
This involves adjusting to the psychological and emotional impacts of illness, disability, or loss of function.
  • I would like to highlight that it takes a few generations (Long Time) for gene to adapt (the so called evolution - adjust and adapt). I observe this in the westerners, though many are much more overweight/obese, yet, their insulin sensitivity could be much better than many of our "normal or slightly overweight" Asians - Malaysians.  This is because material prosperity (money) comes to us quite recently (about the past 50 years), and our gene (most if not all) do not have adequate time to adapt to easy (physically) life with rich food (high calorie intake).

Therefore, if we desire a slower biological ageing,  we need to adapt something else (not our gene).  That is our taste buds and our mindset.

The Textbooks Were Wrong About How Your Tongue Works - The New York Times

Get my point? Our taste bud can adapt quickly -  we can make an experiment this weekend  6 meals (if one can only do 3 meals or even just one meal, it is still good try),

Only drink plain water and eat raw vegetables- (100% natural), no limit, as much as we wish - both plain water, and raw vegetables (Carrot, Cucumber, zucchini, lettuce).

This is not only a great reset for taste bud, but short period (3-5 days) it is also a fantastic anti ageing program.

    Carcinogen Classification. Stuff to avoid

August 22, 2025   We are afraid of dying slowly, ie Dementia, and Cancers.  If there is a way to prevent these, would you be interested?  Many would go for getting to the root causes, and manage exposure to these.  I want to write about cancer causing agents 1st. International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has evaluated >1000 agents and classified them into classes according to likelihood (strength of evidence) as below:       Here is a short YouTube video explaining this table  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP60nNXqNOo   This time, FOR HEALTH, I bring up about WHAT TO AVOID. to stay in good health (the negatives).  Next week, I should talk about what to GET INTO OUR BODY, or DO to stay in good health (the positives). GROUP 1 means "confirmed" cancer causing agents. Here is the link to the list  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IARC_group_1  as of 2024. Here are some we are familiar with: Viruses - HIV, HPV, He...

    ANTIBIOTIC

November 21, 2025   Antibiotic was a great discovery about 100 years ago. It saved many lives over the past century, likely someone closed to you have been protected by it, or even you, and me.     However, situation becomes more complex when it is overused.  Here is why: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) happens when germs—like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—stop responding to the medicines used to kill them. When this happens, antibiotics and other treatments no longer work well. This makes infections harder or sometimes impossible to treat, which can lead to more people getting sick, more severe illness, and more deaths. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a worldwide event held every year from 18 to 24 November . Its goal is to help people understand what AMR is and why it is a serious problem, and to encourage countries and communities to take action. It is one of the official health campaigns of the World Health Organization (WHO). The th...
